New RemControl Android banking malware targets users in Europe and Canada
-
A newly identified Android malware-as-a-service platform called RemControl is actively targeting users across Europe and Canada, according to reporting from BleepingComputer. The operation spreads through malvertising campaigns that impersonate the TVTap IPTV application, tricking victims into installing malicious APK files disguised as a legitimate streaming app.
Once installed, RemControl is designed to facilitate banking fraud and credential theft on compromised Android devices. The malware is offered as a service, meaning affiliates can rent access to the tooling and infrastructure to launch their own campaigns. Details on the full scope of affected banking applications, regional breakdown, or specific indicators of compromise have not been disclosed in the reporting.
Those in the affected regions should exercise added caution when sideloading apps from outside official app stores, particularly anything promoted through ads, and verify app sources before granting sensitive permissions.
