Platform-as-a-Service provider Railway has disclosed that it detected "anomalous activity" involving the systems responsible for storing customer environment variables. According to the company's advisory, an investigation revealed that an unauthorized third party may have accessed encrypted environment variables and, in some cases, obtained their decrypted contents.

Railway stated that the impact appears to be limited to a subset of users, though the specific number of affected customers was not provided.

In response, Railway is urging affected customers to rotate their credentials as a precaution. Environment variables frequently hold sensitive material such as API keys, database connection strings, tokens, and other secrets, making credential rotation a critical step for anyone who may have been exposed.

    • The activity targeted systems storing customer environment variables.
    • An unauthorized third party may have accessed encrypted environment variables.
    • In some cases, decrypted contents may have been obtained.
    • The impact is believed to be limited to a subset of users.
    • Credential rotation is recommended for potentially affected customers.

Users who store secrets in Railway environment variables should consider reviewing access logs and rotating any credentials that were held there, particularly long-lived API keys and database passwords.

Are any of your projects hosted on Railway, and have you rotated your environment secrets yet?
