Attackers are increasingly targeting Google Workspace environments by combining social engineering with malicious OAuth applications, allowing them to access workspace data without needing to steal passwords outright. This approach bypasses traditional credential-focused defenses, since the attacker never needs to obtain a valid password to gain a foothold.

The technique relies on tricking users into granting permissions to a malicious OAuth app. Once consent is given, the app receives delegated access to the victim's account and data, effectively operating within the trust boundary of the organization. This makes detection harder, as the activity originates from what appears to be a legitimate, authorized application.

An upcoming webinar examines two real-world attacks that illustrate how these breaches unfold in practice, walking through the attack chain and highlighting the security controls that can help prevent or detect them.

    Key points covered include:

    • How social engineering is used to deliver malicious OAuth apps
    • Why password theft is not required for these attacks to succeed
    • The mechanics of OAuth consent abuse in Google Workspace
    • Security controls that can mitigate the risk

Has your organization reviewed which third-party OAuth apps currently have access to your Google Workspace environment?
